#Burundi diaspora| Amnesty International Annual Report on Burundi is alarming
There is a true polemic surrounding what is really going on in Burundi. Some try to convince the whole world that the situation in Burundi is under control and all is well. At the same time, there are countless reports that the conditions in the country are disastrous . And it can be confusing to dissociate facts from fiction when one is not on the ground, or seeing it firsthand. After all, we live in a time when “alternative facts” are rampant everywhere.
That is the reason organisations such as Amnesty International are so vital to get some objective facts. Amnesty International is currently the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization that uncovers violations and campaigns for justice.
So when an association like that raises a red flag about your country, we ought to pay attention. In the Burundi 2016-2017 report, Amnesty International listed a number of serious human rights violations that still persist in Burundi:
-Torture and other ill treatment
-Women’s rights violation
-Arbitrary arrests and detentions
-Lack of Freedom of expression
-Human rights defenders targeted
-Lack of accountability
-Increase of refugees and internally displaced people
-Hostility toward International scrutiny
